Tongji University Exchange (Architecture only)

Overview

The Deparment of Architecture in the College of Design and Tongji University's College of Architecture and Urban Planning participate in a reciprocal exchange agreement. Architecture students in their fourth year of the undergraduate program or the second or third year of the graduate program can study at TU during the spring semester. The program seeks to broaden the scope of the academic curriculum and to provide a unique learning experience for students in an overseas environment, as well as to promote cooperation between the two institutions.  This program is limited to two ISU students per year.

Additional information about the Tongji University is available here, and information about the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at TU is available here.

Testimonial

"I am incredibly glad to have both worked and studied in Shanghai because it gave me a chance to experience life in China on a much deeper level than if I had visited as a tourist.  My classes at Tongji University gave me insight into the history of Chinese architecture as well as China’s current and future urban development.  In my architectural design studio in particular I had the opportunity to befriend and work together with both international and Chinese students.  I also took a Mandarin language class and struggled alongside my fellow Westerners with the entirely foreign sounds to help ease at least some of the challenges of daily life in China.  My internship was also a wonderful chance to experience a realistic picture of life as an expatriate in Shanghai, rush hour metro rides included. Trips outside the city revealed an entirely different environment each place I visited; China is such a large and culturally diverse country with so much to see and experience.  I left feeling an attachment to China and its people for all that they taught me in my short six months that I’m sure will last a lifetime."
