Service-Learning in Tanzania:
Sustainable Development & Gender Equality

This program offers a wonderful insight into not only service-learning, but also justice and gender equality in rural Tanzania. The program will run during the summer 2018 for 4 weeks. The tentative dates are May 30 - June 29, 2018. This is a faculty-led global seminar and will take place near Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, the highest mountain in the continent!

Eligibility Requirements:
  • 2.5 GPA
  • Undergraduate and graduate students from all majors and colleges are welcome!
Students wishing to participate in this program will earn 3 credits of LAS 491C: International Service-Learning. Along with this, there will be a 1 credit Study Abroad Pre-departure Seminar (INTST 395A) offered in the Spring in preparation for the trip.  

While participating in this program students will:
  • Learn about development policy and human rights efforts on the ground through the work of community-based organizations and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
  • Partner with local Tanzanians in women's advocacy, economic development, public health, education and improved agricultural techniques.
  • Get hands-on experience during service to learn about Tanzania's society, environment, culture and political economy.
  • Live in a rural environment; visit urban areas as well as a game park.

All participants in this program will be automatically enrolled in CISI, an international health insurance and emergency service plan. This insurance plan is required for all undergraduate and graduate students participating in ISU study abroad programs. The cost of the plan is $1.31 per day, and it has been built into the program fee. More information is available at the links below:

The application deadline for this Summer program is January 15th, 2018. Accepted participants will be notified on a rolling basis upon submission of completed application. Once you are accepted to participate, you must either commit to or decline your offer in the ISUAbroad online application system. Those students who commit to participate are officially part of the program and will be responsible for all program costs listed on the ISUAbroad budget sheet. If you withdraw, you will be responsible for the withdrawal penalty outlined below, in addition to all non-recoverable program payments the college is obligated to make on your behalf. Appeals are possible in certain extenuating circumstances, such as family or medical emergencies. Charges will be applied to your U-bill.
