Program Description:
Introduction to Satellite Imaging of the Earth

May 5 - 13, 2018 (tentative)

Course credit options: 
EE 489X, MTEOR 498x, or GEOL 498x 
 (3 credits) or MTEOR/GEOL/EE 598x (3 credits)

This program will start at Iowa State University as a second-half spring semester online class and will finish in the London area of Guildford, England the first week and half of summer.  Participants will have ample time to explore satellite imaging, England, and return to the U.S. for summer internships.

Study how satellites view and measure properties on Earth using visible light, infrared and thermal energy, imaging radar, and lasers.


Learn how these images are used in different applications including: disaster response, precision agriculture, geology, forestry.The fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation are presented without extensive mathematics (no calculus required).


Explore. Students will tour the Surrey Space Center (SSC) and the Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) company where satellites are manufactured and controlled in orbit. SSC faculty will give seminars. Tours of Salisbury, Stonehenge, the British Museum, Royal Observatory Greenwich, and other sites in and around London included.
