Program Description:

Here, There, and Everywhere Beatles Seminar

Spring Break, 2017 
March 9 - March 19, 2017
Program Director: Jennifer Leptien
 
Your ticket to Ride begins in London as we explore British culture and trace the Beatles rise to fame via the long and winding road streching from Penny Lane to Abbey Road. We will take a Magical Mystery Tour through Liverpool, visiting the childhood homes and stomping grounds of the Fab Four. Our journey concludes in London with a day of exploration and reflection on our Beatles study abroad experience. 

Prerequisite to travel:
London 1

Students should take, or have taken the Here, There, and Everywhere Beatles seminar (INSTS 395/HON 322). The Beatles seminar class meets for 8 weeks, 1st ½ of semester, Tuesdays 6-8 pm, January 9 - February 28. Pre-departure preparations will take place on Saturday from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm; February 25. Study Abroad component in London and Liverpool will be held over spring break: Thursday, March 9-Sunday, March 19, 2017.
 
Throughout the study abroad component, students will: reflect upon the influence of the Beatles on 1960s culture and beyond, deepen understanding of British culture and social references through field trips, reflections, journaling, and group processing, Develop upon internation perspectives through engagement outside country of region.


Program Cost:

$3500, price includes airfare, some meals, all excursions and lodging.

 
Itinerary:

Thursday, March 9: Traveling to London

Des Moines International Airport (DSM) in late afternoon to arrive in London, England (LHR) on Friday, March 10. 

Friday, March 10: London Arrival.
Des Moines International Airport (DSM) to London, England (LHR). Upon arrival, meet and greet assistance at airport and transfer by private motorcoach  to Jurys Inn Islington for check-in (included complimentary wifi throughout).  Afternoon and evening exploration.

London 2
Saturday, March 11:  London.
24-hour ticket provided for Double Decker Bus Tour (Hop on/off) in London for independent exploration. This Double Decker Sightseeing Your offers a flexible hop-on/hop-off with over 80 stops and 3 main sightseeing routes to see all of London and her landmarks. Also visit London’s British Museum or Victoria & Albert Museum with your faculty director(s). a 7-day travel card for zones 1-2 in London also provided.

Sunday, March 12: London.
This morning visit the Tower of London with a public yeoman your, entrance included. In the afternoon, experience a guided walking tour of The Natural History Museum. Evening optional London Walk with Program Directors: Jack the Ripper.

Monday, March 13: London.
Today you will have a morning Beatles London Rock Tour “The Long & Winding Road”. On this tour you will follow the Beatles history in London, from the first hotels they stayed at, to the Macca’s current offices and home. You’ll see over 100 iconic sites and truly walk in the Fab Four’s footsteps. Tentative: An evening theater ticket is provided for Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Tuesday, March 14: London/Liverpool.
Make own way by tube to London Euston Station for departure by train to Liverpool (2nd class off-peak non-flexi ticket provided). Arrive late morning into Liverpool Lime Street Station and walk to Holiday Inn Liverpool City Centre.  In the afternoon, experience a guided walking tour of Beatles sites in Liverpool.
London 3
Wednesday, March 15: Liverpool.
Attend the National Historic Trust Beatles' Childhood Homes Tour to visit the childhood homes of John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney to see where the Beatles met, composed and rehearsed many of their early songs. Walk to the Albert Dock for a tour of the Beatles Story, to see the world's largest permanent exhibition devoted to the lives and times of the Beatles.

Thursday, March 16: Liverpool/London
Morning at leisure for independent exploration. Walk to Liverpool Lime Street Station for afternoon departure to London (2nd class off-peak non flexi tickets provided). Arrive London Euston Station and make own way by tube to Jurys Inn Islington for check-in. Afternoon exploring London in small groups. Evening: London Theater (Kinky Boots).

Friday, March 17: London.
Day trip to Windsor Castle: tour, shops, group lunch. Afternoon to explore London in small groups. Evening: Optional dinner at Simpsons on the Strand with Program Directors.


Saturday March 18: London. 
Morning: Guided tour of Westminster Abbey. Afternoon and Evening: Explore London in small groups.

Sunday March 19: London Departure.
Transfer by private motor coach to London Heathrow Airport for departure
