Program Description:
Human Centered Design in Nicaragua
Program Details:
This 3 credit service learning course will teach students how to work in developing nations to work with locals in collecting information to be used in creating products or processes, access available resourced, to embed design criteria and constraints in a cultural context; appropriate and sustainable technologies will be stressed along with the necessity of observing cultural norms and nuances.

Selected students will be required to participate in a 1 credit prepatory class during the spring semester.  The time will be arranged based on availability of the selected students. 

The summer program will begin in Ames for two weeks.  Students and faculty will then travel to Nicaragua for additional instruction and field experiences. To see what the students did on the program last year, check out the bottom of this brochure page!

  • Freshman - Senior classification (at time of application) in Engineering
  • 2.8 minimum GPA
  • Preference will be given to students with Spanish Language background: 4 years in high school or 200-level proficiency at Iowa State.
