PROGRAM OVERVIEW
How about service-learning in Belize for spring break? Designed with new travelers in mind, and for those not ready to commit to a summer or semester-long experience, this program is built around a service-learning experience that places participants in the heart of a local community. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the University Honors Program have teamed up with Kaya Volunteers to offer this "alternative" spring break experience. Although the program is primarily for first- and second-year undergraduates, other students in ANY major are welcome.

You can travel to Mayan ruins, learn about Garifuna culture by visiting a community in the area, and see the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere--second only to the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. The service-learning field component includes travel on the Friday prior to spring break and the Monday after spring break.
COURSE INFORMATION
The program awards 3 credits of LAS 491C in service-learning reflection (or Honors seminar - LAS 491H) during the spring semester. The seminar starts when regular spring semester classes begin.

Throughout the study abroad component, you will:
  • Engage with local residents and work to build sustainable construction.
  • Offer classes in a school, or through other projects the community needs.
Projects in the past included solar latrines and clean-burning stoves. Students will work on a project in Punta Gorda, Belize.
