International Student Teaching

Have you thought about traveling internationally before starting your career?  International student teaching will give you exposure to classroom environments in another part of the globe and allow you to live internationally for the last eight weeks of your undergraduate experience. Teaching internationally will help your resume to stand out and help you to gain important competencies in international awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity which are important traits outlined by the National Education Association (2010).  International student teaching helps you to practice what you have learned and also allows you to encounter and to learn about other cultures, languages, and traditions that will inspire students in Iowa and across the nation when you return home.

The College of Human Sciences offers international student teaching in: Ecuador, New Zealand, Norway, Taiwan, Germany (Fall only), and Poland (Spring only). As a note, some locations accommodate only certain subject or placement areas. You typically teach in English unless you have high comprehension and communication skills in another language. You will apply, attend an in-person interview, and be selected for a placement with a small cohort of fellow ISU students. Each cohort is assigned a site coordinator (ISU faculty member), who conducts pre-departure preparation, travels to observe the experience, and serves as the supervisor throughout the eight-week student teaching experience.

The experience always takes place the second eight weeks of a student teaching semester. Site coordinators visit during those eight weeks, observing you in your classroom setting, and provide feedback to enhance your teaching and to promote professional growth. Each school placement meets State of Iowa licensing standards, and the teaching placement is secured by the site coordinator. In addition to full program coordination, local housing is secured by ISU (Taiwan and Poland offer free housing!), and you are encouraged to partake in professional development activities in schools.

To learn more about the International Student Teaching locations, please attend the International and Outside Locations Open House on January 17th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. The Open House is always held on the second Wednesday of the fall and spring terms, and you are encouraged to attend even if Fall 2018is not the term in which you plan to student teach. This will also be where you sign up for your interviews if you do plan on study teaching abroad in Fall 2018. Please talk to Ann Pierce, International Student Teaching Coordinator, 515-294-3158, to discuss your international student teaching options!
