Program Description:

NOTE: International Student Teaching locations for Fall 2009 include England, Italy, Mexico and New Zealand. Spring 2010 opportunities are expected to include Italy, New Zealand, Norway and Puerto Rico.

ISU teacher education majors can develop a global perspective and international mindedness that will enhance their professional teaching abilities through international student teaching. International student teachers grow in many ways, learn much about themselves and another culture and return to teach in Iowa with a different world awareness.

Since 1994, the College of Human Sciences has offered a wide range of short term, collaborative international student teaching experiences to our preservice teachers. Selected sites are a result of long range, ongoing partnerships with cities, schools and universities around the world. Students apply, interview and are selected for placement with a small cohort of fellow ISU students at each site. Each cohort is assigned a faculty person or coordinator who serves as liaison, supervisor and mentor throughout the eight week student teaching experience.

International mindedness requires that teachers and schools model the same level of involvement and curiosity they hope to inspire in our children. In a teacher education program, this is best accomplished by allowing preservice teachers to venture beyond our U.S. borders for their culminating field experience, while providing them with a variety of supports to be successful. It is our hope that with each new global educator produced, and each new experience shared in a classroom, children are impacted in positive ways.

The University Teacher Education Program places student teachers in cooperation with universities, private, and public K-12 schools. Each site has a cooperating teacher and fully-qualified supervisor to provide a fully-supervised eight-week student teaching experience for K-12 students in most content areas. In addition to full program coordination, excursions, weekend trips, and medical insurance are available.

Students in the secondary content areas should discuss student teaching placements with their faculty coordinators prior to application to avoid program conflict or disappointment.

World Language majors do not qualify for international student teaching placements.
