Student Counseling Services (SCS) provides confidential prevention, intervention, information and referral services to Iowa State students. Assistance is available for students coping with relationship problems, low self-esteem, stress, loneliness, depression, cultural differences, sexual assault recovery, childhood abuse, trauma, eating disorders, substance abuse, career/major, academic motivations and other concerns. Most professional services of Student Counseling Services are provided by the university at no charge to students.
Student Union Board
Student Union Board is a student run organization that coordinates events ranging from concerts and films to comedy shows and cultural showcases. These events throughout the semester are free for students.Student Organizations
You can join one of the many student organizations while you're here at Iowa State. Organizations are available surrounding many different themes including cultural, academic, religious, or fun activities. Some more unique student orgs include the glassblowing, unicycling, and more!The Workspace
The Workspace is an art center where students can express their creative side. They have monthly crafts, different art lessons, and pottery painting available.
Recreation Services
Rec Services has multiple fitness facilities on campus for student use. There are workout rooms, weight rooms, pools, tracks, and group fitness classes available throughout the semester.Outdoor Recreation
A part of Rec Services, Outdoor Recreation offers local and farther away trips throughout the semester for students for a fee. The local trips can be hiking, kayaking, or canoeing at different locations throughout Iowa. The farther away trips are typically over the longer breaks and go to areas of the USA known for their natural beauty. Some trips can even be to international locations (like Costa Rica). Exchange students would just need to be sure to get their paperwork signed by ISSO before departing the USA.
In addition to our academics, ISU is known nationally for our sports. We are known as Cyclones, and you may even see our mascot Cy walking around campus on Fridays. We play in the Big 12 conference, playing against other large sports schools from states like Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. Going to a Cyclone sporting event is a must-do during your time at ISU!

Spring Sports: Basketball, Wrestling, Gymnastics, Baseball and Softball.
Student Tickets
All sports are free for ISU students EXCEPT football and men's basketball. This website has more information about how to access tickets or buy tickets online. Due to high demand and a lottery for season tickets for football and basketball, exchange students may find it easier to buy individual game tickets for those sports from other students selling their's online.
The city of Ames offers many activities as well that students can partake in. There are festivals on Main street throughout the year and a farmer's market on Main Street during much of the fall semester. The city itself also has shopping available (like Target, Walmart, and the North Grand Mall) and there are 2 movie theaters in town.
CyRide
CyRide is a bus system that runs throughout campus and the city of Ames. CyRide is free with an ISU student ID, and they even have additional services like night busses on the weekend. CyRide is the main mode of transportation for most ISU students.
