Food Safety in the UK (Bristol, Landford, London)

Course Number VMPM496GB

This is a short-term study abroad program to the UK focusing on food safety, public health, and the UK/European customs, regulations, and processes related to food, animal health and animal welfare. Our hosts will be faculty members at the University of Bristol, School of Veterinary Sciences, based in Langford. The course will consist of lectures, demonstrations, field trips, 3 half-days in an U of B abattoir, guest speakers, visits to national offices and cultural experiences.

Program costs:$5867 plus tuition and fees: $3013 (3 credits of Vet Med ) Please note, tuition-paying Vet Med students will receive $1000 from the College to help defray the costs of their tuition.  Program costs include international flight, lodging, meals, guides, in-country transportation, entrance fees, etc.

Day 1

Departure from Des Moines

Day 2

Arrive Bristol, UK. Breakfast, lunch, dinner in Bristol. Settle into housing in Bristol. Tour of Bristol and campus? Group dinner.

Day 3

Drive to Langford. Tour vet school & clinics. Meet Head of College & vet students. Lunch in Langford. Welcome dinner. Meet Bristol vet students/presentations/meals together while there.

Day 4

Lectures on food safety, regulations, policies, agencies, welfare. Afternoon: sheep farm. Lunch in Langford. Wyndhurst farm.

Day 5

Lectures on food safety, regulations, policies, agencies, welfare. Afternoon: Cheddar, gorge, cheese plant. Lunch in Langford.

Day 6

Lectures on food safety, regulations, policies, agencies, welfare. Afternoon: Poultry or swine farm. Lunch in Langford.

Day 7

Van Bristol to Bath. Tour Roman baths and Bath Abbey. Lunch and dinner in Bath. Return to Bristol in late evening.

Day 8

Madmax Tour: Stonehenge, Avebury, Cotswold villages. Van ride to Bath and return from Bath to Bristol. Breakfast in Bristol, lunch on road, dinner in Bath or Bristol

 

Day 9

Free day. Meals and activities on own.

Day 10

Abattoir in Langford 7:30 am-noon. Breakfast in Bristol. Lunch in Langford. Afternoon: Cider distillery tour. Dinner in Bristol.


Day 11

Abattoir in Langford 7:30 am-noon. Breakfast in Bristol. Lunch in Langford. Visit wildlife park and discussion on TB. Dinner in Bristol

Travel to London. Hotel for 5 nights.  City Farm. Boat tour of Thames

London free day. Meals and activities on own. Tower of London tour. Tour of Parliament.

Day 16
London free day. Meals and activities on own.

London: meet with DEFRA and DFID and others.

Day 18
London: wrap up meetings. Free time. Group farewell dinner.
