Program Description:


CIEE Community Development, Language & Culture in Iringa, Tanzania
Take part in a hands-on exploration of the challenges and issues facing Tanzania today, including sanitation, disease, hunger, poor education, gender inequality, climate change, HIV, water issues, land issues, and deforestation. Through fascinating coursework and activities with locals, you’ll learn about issues impacting urban, peri-urban, and rural Tanzanian communities. You’ll also participate in a four-week field study with an organization serving orphans, vulnerable children, and underserved populations in rural Tanzania. Lastly, you’ll gain a basic proficiency in the Swahili language.

  • Explore three distinct communities in Tanzania: The economic epicenter, Dar es Salaam; the mid-sized town of Iringa; and the rural district of Mufindi
  • Participate in an intensive, four-week, embedded field-study research and volunteer experience at an NGO that addresses public health, and educational, and social welfare issues in rural Tanzania

Iringa
CIEE Community Development, Language + Culture
Take part in a unique, comparative exploration of the challenges and issues facing Tanzania today while studying the Kiswahili language in Iringa. Through fascinating coursework and many community engagement activities with locals, you’ll explore three distinct communities in Tanzania—Dar es Salaam, Iringa, and Mufindi—to gain knowledge about current issues impacting urban, peri-urban, and rural Tanzanian communities.

You’ll also participate in an intensive four-week embedded field study experience at an NGO serving orphans, vulnerable children, and underserved populations in rural Tanzania to obtain hands-on experience with the development opportunities being created by local organizations, individuals, and companies today.
