Spring Break in Edinburgh: English 250

A storied university whose faculty and graduates helped define modern Europe and North America.  A city of fascinating architecture, built on volcanic formations.  A castle that reflects military and political history.  The birthplace of ideas that shaped the United States.  Serpentine alleys and passages that inspired the author of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

General Information

Imagine your spring break in Edinburgh, Scotland--getting to know the impressive ancient University of Edinburgh, walking on the Salisbury Crags (located right behind your university accommodations), touring Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish Parliament, the National Museum of Scotland, Greyfriar's Kirkyard, Lady Stair's Close and HouseSt Giles Cathedral, and much more.
  • Linked to a special section of English 250, Spring Break in Edinburgh is an opportunity to explore the University of Edinburgh as an ancient university (founded 1582)--one of only seven ancient universities still existing and offering up-to-date programs for further study abroad after this program.
  • We will look at the importance of this university within the context of its fascinating historical and geological city setting.
  • Emphasis will be on art, architecture, literature (Edinburgh is the UNESCO City of Literature).

In this special section of English 250, we will read about the influence of place on our lives and our learning, about travel, and about a liberal arts education in our globalizing world. And your spring break trip to the University of Edinburgh will earn you an extra hour of credit! (English 395).

We will stay on the Royal Mile and take a bus ride or an easy walk to the sites above and many more!

Help your future take shape by exploring a touchstone of history and ideas:
Edinburgh, Scotland.

Participants may be freshmen, sophomores or juniors, who have not yet taken English 250 and plan to take it Spring 2018.
