Designed with freshmen in mind, and for those not ready to commit to a summer or semester-long experience, Spring Break in Oaxaca is built around a service-learning experience that places participants in the heart of the Oaxaca community, working on projects the community has decided are important.
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the University Honors Program have jointly developed this new and innovative program with ProWorld Service Corps to offer an "alternative" spring break experience. A local non-governmental organization, Pro Mexico, works in community development in and around the City of Oaxaca--a beautiful colonial area in the heart of southern Mexico.
Previous knowledge of Spanish is not required but helpful. Some basic survival Spanish will be offered as part of the orientation seminar and on site to facilitate simple communication. The program awards 2 credits of LAS 291X in service-learning reflection (or Honors seminar - HON 322). Service projects engage participants in the Oaxaca community, as they work to build a school, painting a mural, teaching good hygiene, or engaging in similar projects to be determined by local needs. The program participants travel to impoverished areas of Oaxaca.
The program will include home-stays with Mexican families and cultural excursions, including the magnificent pre-Columbian Zapotec city of Monte Albán that dates back to 500 BC.
