Program Description:
Service Learning in Rwanda
A Land of a Thousand Hills
May 9-30, 2010



Program Overview

This exciting 3 week summer opportunity is conducted in collaboration with the Kigali Institute of Education in Rwanda, The Gisimba Memorial Orphanage in Kigali and Gishwati Area Conservation Program in Gisenyi. 

In partnership with a local Rwandese peers, ISU students will complete a service learning activity that promotes well being of individuals, families and communities in Rwanda

The last 4 days of the program, the group will travel to Northern Tanzania for a safari in East Africa's national parks and interaction with indigenous people.

Hike of a lifetime! Hike 2-3 hours and see the endangered mountain gorillas at Ruhingiire National Park, Rwanda

Objectives
Participants will
  • develop and implement a service learning project that is relevant to culturally diverse audiences in a developing country;
  • gain a better understanding of efforts to address the MDG's, poverty, access to education, gender equity, health, HIV/AIDS, and environmental sustainability;
  • enhance their global perspective of everyday life of individuals, families and communities in a developing country.

FCEDS 424/524, FCEDS 490/590 (3 credits).  Check with your Advisor how this course fits into your Program of Study.

Program Fee
To be determined (estimated $5,400).  It will includes RT airfare DSM-Kigali-DSM, lodging, meals, transportation to/from airport, full-time ground transportation in Rwanda and Tanzania, visa fees, park entrance fees). Participants also will be responsible for ISU tuition and fees.

Itinerary
Week 1: Travel and orientation to Rwanda and service learning
Week 2: Service learning and site visits/education in Kigali/ Northern Rwanda
Week 3: Service learning, presentation; safari in northern Tanzania
Fall semester: Presentations to community and ISU

Accommodation and Transportation

In Rwanda, the group will stay at Hotel Chez Lando in Kigali, which offers two on-site restaurants and wireless Internet (as available).  Outside of Kigali, the group will stay in Modest accommodations. In Tanzania, lodging will be mostly in guest lodges and tented camps:

Application Process
Application is open to all students with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Selection is based on review of applications - including the applicant's statement of purpose - and a personal interview with program directors. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis until January 15, 2010. Class size is limited to 14 students.
